A fan-made PvP multiplayer mod for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC has been cancelled after its creator was contacted by Sony Interactive Entertainment and asked to halt its release. The modder, Speclizer, shared the news on social media: "Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to [be released] this month. Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released. Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day but I hope you'll continue to follow me onto the next project, this time something of my own." Speclizer had posted 25 minutes of gameplay footage in June, noting the project started in January 2026 and was slated for release this month. The mod's development was partially funded through Patreon, which may have drawn unwanted attention. This cancellation is a blow to fans of The Last of Us multiplayer, especially since Naughty Dog scrapped its own official multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe in late 2023. The studio explained that releasing it would have required dedicating all resources to post-launch content for years, hindering future single-player projects. Former Sony Interactive Entertainment executive Shuhei Yoshida, who played The Last of Us Online, called it "great," and its director Vinit Agarwal says former colleagues still tell him it was "the best multiplayer game they've ever played."
