Fortnite's beloved Pokémon-like Sprites are here to stay, as developer Epic Games confirms their return for the upcoming season. The studio has also teased a gaming-themed season that may feature crossovers with Sonic the Hedgehog, Persona, and Tetris.
Sprites made a big splash at the start of the current season, introducing a growing collection of adorable creatures that players can gather, trade, and level up to enhance their abilities. This feature has been a massive hit, fostering a dedicated community of Sprite enthusiasts and contributing to a notable surge in Fortnite's player numbers.
It's a pleasant surprise, then, that Epic has confirmed Sprites will continue into the next season, with a whole new generation on the horizon. In a community blog post, Epic promised new powers, quality-of-life improvements based on player feedback, and "new ways to discover Sprites in (and out of) your games. Mysterious!"
To underscore Sprites' importance going forward, Epic is launching a new Sprite Garden experience where players can showcase their collected Sprites—both from Season 3 and the Gen 2 Sprites arriving in Season 4. You'll even be able to visit friends' Sprite Gardens.
Season 4 will also finally introduce five community-designed Sprites, created through a player contest that drew over 20,000 entries. These include the Bullet Sprite (ammo boxes grant more ammo), Honey Sprite (sends a swarm of bees at enemies who attack you), Pond Sprite (increases swim speed and jump height), and X-Ray Sprite (reveals players through walls). My personal favorite, though, is the adorable raccoon-like Dumpster Dive Sprite (gather loot from jumping into dumpsters).
What else can we expect from next season? Sneaky dataminers have already spotted in-game posters expected to appear across Fortnite's map later this month, teasing collaborations with Tetris, Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac-Man, and Persona.
"Break the rules. Change the game." Epic teased for Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, confirming its launch date of August 20. Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has also offered his customary teaser word for the incoming season: "Hackers."
