Destiny 2 is experiencing a massive resurgence with the release of its final update. Fans have turned out in droves to bid farewell to the beloved sci-fi shooter. Although Destiny 2's servers will remain active for the foreseeable future, no new content will be added. The final update launched today, and as of writing, the game's 24-hour concurrent player count on Steam has peaked at 167,000. This is the highest player count since the release of 2024's The Final Shape, the last paid expansion, which peaked at 314,000 players.

Some players have reported difficulties logging into Destiny 2 due to the sudden influx. Ahead of the update, fans aimed to surpass Marathon's all-time peak and crash Destiny 2's servers to show Bungie and Sony that Destiny should continue. They have already blown past Marathon's all-time peak of 77,000 players, and the campaign appears successful in creating server instability. Given this happened during the workday in the United States, it will be interesting to see if numbers surge further in the evening or weekend.

Last month, Bungie announced that support for Destiny 2 would end in June, catching fans off guard as many expected more expansions. However, Bungie has chosen to focus on supporting Marathon, its latest release, which has failed to attract a significant regular player base and has resulted in substantial losses for Sony, Bungie's parent company.

Destiny fans have been upset since the news broke, even demanding a third game during Summer Game Fest. Unfortunately, Destiny 3 does not appear to be in development, as Bloomberg reports no active development of a new game. Additionally, Bungie is planning "significant" layoffs, although the company is reportedly pitching and prototyping new games in the Destiny universe.

The cost to make such a game is likely too high given Bungie's financial woes, and it wouldn't release until the early 2030s. But stranger things have happened, so maybe Destiny 3 could happen one day—just not anytime soon.
