Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 Headed to New Platforms Next Month

Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 are getting official ports to new platforms in July, courtesy of Iron Galaxy, known for Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4. Treyarch confirmed today that these beloved Call of Duty titles are making a grand return, though the ports will be exclusive to PlayStation. It's unclear which specific PlayStation platforms they'll target, but initial leaks suggest they'll be available on PS4 and playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility. Whether PS5 will get native ports remains unknown.

Treyarch also confirmed that the ports will include campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes—the full packages. However, details on cross-progression, cross-play with other versions, or whether they'll be isolated are still under wraps.

While Treyarch made no mention of Xbox or PC upgrades, both games are already readily available on those platforms. The Black Ops titles have been playable on Xbox for years thanks to extensive backwards compatibility, but native PS3 support is absent on PS4 and PS5. This news is exciting and somewhat unexpected, as Call of Duty has largely avoided re-releases in recent years.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was remastered in 2016 and was a huge hit, but it also diverted attention from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. A campaign-only remaster of Modern Warfare 2 followed in 2020, but fans were disappointed that its iconic multiplayer was omitted. Since then, fans have speculated that Activision avoided similar projects to prevent splitting the player base of newer Call of Duty games.
