Last month, Sony revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 would receive a PSSR 2 update, and now CD Projekt Red has announced a significant PS5 Pro update set to launch on April 8.

Cyberpunk 2077 faced a troubled release on consoles in 2020, and even after numerous patches, it has lagged behind the PC version. Since the PS5 Pro debuted in 2024, fans have eagerly awaited an update from CDPR to bridge this gap.

Tomorrow's update introduces three performance profiles for PS5 Pro players: Ray Tracing Pro, Ray Tracing, and Performance. The Ray Tracing Pro mode includes visual enhancements tailored for the PS5 Pro, aiming for 30-40 fps with a new 'BVH8' (8-way bounding volume hierarchy) ray tracing implementation. While CDPR hasn't detailed the specifics, this technology is expected to track up to eight light rays for more realistic reflections, shadows, and global illumination. Although it doesn't match the PC's Ray Tracing Overdrive mode, it should bring the PS5 Pro closer to the PC's Ray Tracing Ultra preset.

CD Projekt's blog post provides little information about the image quality in the 'Performance' mode, only noting it targets high frame rates. Similar to other PS5 Pro Performance modes, it will likely resemble the base PS5 version but with significantly improved frame rates. The standard 'Ray Tracing' mode will offer a balanced experience, targeting a steady 60 fps.

The exact performance and visual quality of this Cyberpunk PS5 Pro update will be clear when it goes live on April 8, but the blog post screenshots are encouraging. I plan to download and test the update myself tomorrow morning. If CDPR can achieve visuals comparable to the PC version, it will strongly demonstrate the capabilities of PSSR 2.
