Asha Sharma, the new head of Xbox, is reportedly proceeding cautiously as she reevaluates the company's approach to exclusive games. Since replacing Phil Spencer earlier this year, Sharma has implemented several significant changes to win back core gaming fans, including ending the controversial 'This is an Xbox' marketing campaign, introducing quick new Xbox console features, and cutting Game Pass prices.
Most notably, Microsoft has announced plans to 'reevaluate our approach to exclusivity,' a tantalizing hint for fans who feel Xbox consoles have been devalued by the company's multiplatform push. However, the specifics remain unclear. Microsoft has already committed several first-party titles to PlayStation 5, including future Halo games, raising questions about whether it will reverse course despite the success of its games on Sony's console.
According to The Verge's Tom Warren, Sharma 'has been evaluating a range of options for Xbox exclusive games, but is treading carefully here and isn’t yet ready to commit to any major changes.' One possibility is timed exclusivity rather than day-one releases on PlayStation. For instance, Playground's Forza Horizon 6, launching this month on Xbox and PC, is expected to hit PS5 in 2026. Given the success of Forza Horizon 5 on PlayStation, Microsoft may be reluctant to forgo that revenue.
Meanwhile, Gears of War E-Day has only been confirmed for Xbox and PC, leaving the door open for a PS5 skip. Sharma faces tough decisions as she works to turn Xbox around, acknowledging the ongoing financial struggles of Microsoft's gaming business. All this unfolds as Microsoft's next-generation console, Project Helix, looms on the horizon. While details are scarce, the device is expected to support both PC and console games and come at a premium price. Microsoft has promised more information later this year.
