Earlier this week, IGN conducted a poll asking which edition of GTA 6 you plan to buy: the $80 Standard Edition or the $100 Ultimate Edition. After thousands of responses, the results are in—and they might surprise some.
Rockstar has confirmed the base GTA 6 game, which is single-player only, will cost $79.99. This is a $10 increase over the standard $69.99 price point we've seen this console generation, though Nintendo has charged $80 for games like Mario Kart World. So even at its cheapest, GTA 6 is more expensive than most other games.
The Ultimate Edition costs $20 more at $99.99 and includes several eye-catching exclusives, such as exclusive shops and even an exclusive mission. Here's everything you get in the Ultimate Edition (if you need a reminder): [list omitted for brevity].
The Ultimate Edition has sparked significant debate, with some arguing that Rockstar has effectively priced GTA 6 at $100, as fans won't want to miss out on all this content. We wanted to see if the Ultimate Edition would actually be the more popular choice despite the $20 premium—so we asked you.
With just under 3,000 votes so far, 70.7% said they are buying the Ultimate Edition, while only 29.3% plan to buy the Standard Edition. That's not even close—clearly, the Ultimate Edition content has done its job. Fans really want it, and most are willing to pay more to get it.
Of course, many other factors are influencing decisions around GTA 6. The lack of a disc in the physical version is one of the hottest topics from this week's big reveal, and I've seen plenty of people saying they'll hold off in case Rockstar releases a box with an actual disc later. Some say the $80 price point is too expensive and will wait for a sale. But my gut feeling is that most will want to be there for GTA 6 on day one when it launches in November. This is shaping up to be the biggest entertainment launch of all time, and the FOMO will be hard to resist.
Then there's the question of GTA Online. Rockstar hasn't said anything about a potential new version of GTA Online for GTA 6, though fans expect it eventually. Could it arrive by Christmas? Early next year? Even later? Some might wait for confirmation before spending their money.
For now, though, we can safely say the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition is overwhelmingly popular, which begs the question: is GTA 6 effectively the first $100 game?
Some certainly think so. "The Ultimate Edition is the default option for this game, and the $80 version is the cheaper option," said Redditor ice_spice2020. "Why else would Rockstar price the Ultimate Edition at only $100, not $120 or $140 like other companies? The $20 gap between Standard and Ultimate for a game of this magnitude is too odd to ignore. I bet they really wanted to charge $100 but knew jumping from $70 to $100 was too big, so they paywalled some content. Locking items behind a paywall is one thing, but making certain locations exclusive to the Ultimate Edition (even side missions) makes the Standard $80 edition look unfinished. I see people defending it, but to me, it sets a dangerous precedent that will only get worse."
Others agreed. "I view it as $100 for the single-player game," said No-Significance2070. However, some disagreed and said they aren't bothered by missing the Ultimate Edition content. "I couldn’t care less about stores or my character’s appearance," Carniscrub said. "Losing a couple cars is lame but not a deal breaker. $80 is the default."
