Call of Duty: Black Ops fans have discovered a previously unseen Zombies mode, hidden for over 15 years since the game's original launch. YouTuber JTAG uncovered a tower defense variant in the recent PS4 port of Black Ops 1 and shared gameplay footage. The unfinished mode is rough but would have allowed players to place turrets to fend off zombie hordes across a maze-like map, with a bird's-eye view similar to Bloons Tower Defense, while also letting players jump into first-person action like standard Call of Duty.
This scrapped mode may have been replaced by Dead Ops Arcade, a secret twin-stick shooter in the original Black Ops accessible via a hidden terminal in the main menu. Dead Ops Arcade became a cult favorite and reappeared in later Black Ops titles.
Treyarch has long experimented with the Zombies formula. The original Zombies mode was secretly developed by a small passionate team using recycled assets from Call of Duty: World at War, without Activision's initial approval. Once presented to executives, it became a beloved franchise staple. This tower defense mode likely represents one of many experimental ideas that never made the cut. While it probably won't return, its discovery offers a rare glimpse into the series' creative history, preserved by the recent ports.
