Peter Molyneux Weighs In on Fable Reboot Dropping Fan-Favorite Feature from Original

Since the new Fable's big gameplay reveal in January, fans have been comparing it to the originals and noting which beloved features from the Xbox and 360 trilogy didn't make the cut. One such feature is the morality-based character morphing system, which changed your character's appearance based on their actions—like a halo for good deeds or devil horns for evil ones.

IGN spoke to Peter Molyneux, the former head of Lionhead Studios and creator of the original Fable, who just released his new game Masters of Albion into early access on Steam. He shared his thoughts on the missing feature: "Yeah, that's a real shame. I don't know why they've done that." He speculated that the high-definition graphics of modern games make it harder to implement, especially with different genders, which "doubles and triples your work." Still, he hopes there's some good and evil alignment in the new game.

While the new Fable does have a morality system, it's far less binary than the original's. Earlier in 2026, IGN sat down with Playground founder Ralph Fulton, who explained the decision to drop the morphing feature. "That sort of character morphing feature, obviously a really central part of the original games. It's not in ours," Fulton said. He cited two reasons: first, the new game doesn't have objective good and evil—your morality is subjective, based on what different people value. Second, the game's reputation system means your appearance and identity reset when you enter new areas, allowing you to build a fresh reputation. "You couldn't do that if you walked in with horns and a trident," he explained. "Your reputation would precede you." For Playground, the ability to control your identity felt more important than the legacy feature.
