Stranger Than Heaven Director Clarifies Tupac's Inclusion, Addresses Criticism

The executive director of Stranger Than Heaven has responded to concerns about Tupac Shakur appearing in the game. During Summer Game Fest, it was revealed that the late rapper would have a supporting role, despite his death 30 years ago. Tupac won't play himself; instead, a character resembling him will be voiced by a real actor, not AI. This decision has sparked controversy, especially given that Tupac's estate is managed by Tom Whalley, who has been involved in legal disputes with Tupac's family. However, director Masayoshi Yokoyama told IGN that both the estate and family approved the role. He compared it to using the likeness of deceased actor Bunta Sugawara in previous games, noting that they secured permission and ensured the roles honor the individuals. Yokoyama explained they chose a real actor for the voice to bring personality rather than imitation. He acknowledged potential criticism but defended the creative choice, stating their goal is to create an inspiring experience, not please everyone. The character will interact with Snoop Dogg's Orpheus, a smuggler in Japan. Stranger Than Heaven launches on January 15, 2027, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
