Capcom's acclaimed Resident Evil 4 Remake has reached its third anniversary, but there's one character not joining the celebration: the game's iconic merchant, who players have collectively left with a staggering debt exceeding 3 trillion ptas.

To commemorate the game's third birthday, developer Capcom shared official statistics on social media detailing all transactions made with the merchant across every copy of the game. Over the past three years, the merchant has sold gear worth 39,914,290,699,099 ptas (referencing the old Spanish peseta currency). That's over 39 trillion ptas in sales, yet the merchant remains in financial trouble.

Since the game's launch, players have also sold items worth 43,251,570,618,389 ptas back to the merchant—over 43 trillion ptas worth of elegant crowns, masks, and butterfly lamps. When these figures are tallied, it spells good news for players but bad news for the merchant, who now finds himself 3.34 trillion ptas in arrears.

Just like in the original Resident Evil 4, the remake allows players to sell various treasures and trinkets to the merchant in exchange for weapon upgrades and rocket launchers, which can one-hit KO most bosses. Each one-use rocket launcher costs 160,000 ptas, making it a prized item that requires careful saving.

The Resident Evil 4 merchant remains one of the game's most beloved features, with his mysterious backstory and gravelly catchphrases etched into the memories of many players. You can almost hear him now, trying to reduce his debt: "What're you buying, stranger?" Perhaps your response should be, "Not enough cash, stranger?"

In the newly released Resident Evil Requiem, a similar buying and selling system while playing as Leon is now handled by a computer, marking a shift in how such interactions are managed.

Upon its launch in 2023, IGN awarded Capcom's Resident Evil 4 Remake a rare 10/10, praising it as: "Whether you're a fan of the original or a newcomer craving top-tier action-horror, Resident Evil 4 is an absolute must-play."
