Sony's Rough Month Worsens as PSN Outage Leaves Gamers Unable to Play Digital Games, Fueling Physical Media Debate

Sony's PlayStation Network has been down for hours today, preventing players from accessing many digital games. Unsurprisingly, affected users are highlighting the benefits of physical copies, just weeks after Sony's controversial announcement that it will phase out PS5 discs.

PlayStation services started experiencing issues for some users around 8:30 AM Eastern, coinciding with an alert from Amazon Web Services about connectivity problems in the US-WEST-2 region. Although AWS marked the issue as resolved about an hour later, players continue to report problems both in the U.S. and abroad.

The outage hit as the open beta for Sony's console-exclusive Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls was underway. The developer acknowledged the issues on PS5, tweeting: "We're aware that some PlayStation players are experiencing login and network issues. Our team is actively investigating."

As of now, Sony's service status page shows errors across all PSN services, including playing and purchasing digital content, streaming games, and account management. Sony wrote: "You might have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

While outages happen, the timing couldn't be worse. Besides impacting a key Sony title, the disruption comes amid ongoing backlash over Sony's decision to stop releasing new PS5 games on physical discs starting January 2028. This move has sparked a massive petition, social media outrage, and angry comments on every Sony trailer or livestream.

Just last night, Sony released new footage of Marvel's Wolverine, but YouTube comments are flooded with disc-related complaints. Analysts and former Sony staff say the decision is unlikely to change, but fans aren't letting it go. Today's outage highlights the pitfalls of an all-digital future.
