Street Fighter 6's Alex Marriage Update Sparks Confusion with Vague Family Ties

Street Fighter 6 introduced Alex to its roster last month, but what was meant to be a celebratory return quickly turned controversial. The arcade mode ending and World Tour scenes revealed Alex's complicated family situation: he is now married to Patricia, who was previously portrayed as his younger stepsister and distant cousin. The April 15 patch aimed to address fan backlash but has instead drawn criticism for making Alex's convoluted family relations even more ambiguous.

Alex Winger, the American fighter who first appeared in 1997's Street Fighter 3 New Generation, was originally shown with an adoptive father and mentor figure named Tom. Alex and Tom's daughter Patricia grew up together, with their relationship always depicted as sibling-like. Street Fighter 6 dramatically alters this dynamic by revealing that Alex and Patricia are now married and expecting a baby.

This revelation alone unsettled many fans, but the confusion deepened with details from Street Fighter 6's World Tour mode. Alex's dialogue indicated that Tom is actually a cousin of Alex's mother, making Alex and Patricia second cousins.

The backlash was so intense that game director Takayuki Nakayama apologized and promised adjustments in a future patch. The April 15 update modified some of Alex's World Tour story text in certain localizations, including English.

So what exactly changed? Story-wise, very little. Instead of clearly stating that Tom and Alex's mother are cousins, Alex's dialogue now says Tom is "a distant relative of my mom or something, and was a sparring buddy of my dad." Alex's description of Tom's role in his life also became vaguer. Previously, he said, "He's my trainer, my manager, my adoptive dad... No, he is my dad." Now, Tom is simply "basically the dad I needed." This adjustment brings it closer to the original Japanese version, which uses the ambiguous term 'sodate no oya,' meaning a parent-like figure who helped raise him, not necessarily a formal adoptive father.

Before the patch, Nakayama posted an apology on X for the "confusion" caused by Alex's backstory. He explained, "While we have not changed the characters’ backstories, after internal review by the development team, we plan to revise certain text passages that may have been misleading." The post linked to 'A Toast between Fathers,' an official short story by Street Fighter 6's scenario team that details how Alex and Patricia's relationship evolved from sibling-like to romantic.

Essentially, Capcom's response to the marriage controversy has been to provide additional backstory justifying the relationship shift while making the biological connection between Alex and Patricia even less clear.

The patch has left fans with mixed feelings of dissatisfaction and bemusement. Many are puzzled why Capcom insists on keeping Alex and Patricia biologically related in some way. The change to Tom being a distant relative "or something" sparked humorous reactions online, with one Redditor noting, "They're hoping that 'Or something' does A LOT of heavy lifting." If anything, the adjustments make Alex seem uncertain or even embarrassed about his intricate family history.
