Marathon has rolled out its first major post-launch patch, Update 1.0.0.4, bringing a series of balance adjustments that aim to make the extraction shooter more accessible. This move comes in response to player feedback highlighting the game's steep difficulty, attributed to scarce ammo and healing items, along with the formidable AI of UESC enemies.
The update introduces several key changes: it increases the spawn rates of Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates on the starting map, Perimeter, boosts starting ammo in free Sponsored Kits like MIDA, CyberAcme, and Arachne, and reduces the frequency of EMP grenade drops from UESC Grenadiers. Combat-wise, the audible range of gunfire and explosions has been expanded, and most UESC enemies now have slightly reduced health, with UESC bosses seeing a small decrease in shield HP.
Acknowledging concerns from the game's dedicated fanbase, Bungie included a developer note to reassure players that the AI's challenging nature remains a priority. "With this change, we hope to alleviate some of the resource burden in both Solos and Crews when engaging UESC in combat," the studio stated. "The goal is to let your bullets and meds stretch further without dulling the UESC's bite. We hear the feedback loud and clear that players value the friction our UESC combatants provide, and we have no plans to change that direction."
Echoing this sentiment, Bungie community lead Cosmo emphasized on Twitter that UESC enemies "will still f**k you up," addressing worries that the patch might soften the game's core challenge too much.
Weapon adjustments include a nerf to thermal scopes and an increase in default ammo capacity for Overrun. The update also implements the promised rewards pass and store changes, alongside the introduction of new contracts: NuCaloric and Traxus.
A temporary change disables the "Broken Wing" entrance to the Pinwheel for tuning, as it currently makes access too easy. Bungie is tweaking it to better balance risk and reward while preserving the silent entry concept, with other methods still available.
This patch arrives amid ongoing discussions about Marathon's performance, a critical release for Bungie following financial challenges noted by studio owner Sony. While exact player numbers from Sony or Microsoft aren't disclosed, Steam data shows a peak concurrent player count of 88,337, with relatively stable engagement on Valve's platform. Sales figures and official comments on whether the game meets expectations are still pending, fueling debates about whether its difficulty or learning curve might be turning players away.
